Hostel or Hostile – Chiang Mai, Luang Prabang, Siem Reap

Teeraya Boutique- Chiang Mai

This hostel was only about five minutes drive from the airport which was very handy. The first thing you notice about this hostel as you enter is the pool outside, which had it been sunny would have been very enjoyable! Our room was a fair size and was nicely decorated, but we had a small bathroom that smelt a bit musty. We also had our own balcony, overlooking the pool. The room had air-con, WiFi, a TV and a fridge with free water.

The location was excellent for the Saturday walking market, which was about 30 seconds away from the hostel. They gave us a map and the rest of the town was either walkable, or we were able to find a tuk tuk driver easily to take us where we wanted to go.

Cleanliness- 6/10
Atmosphere- 6/10
Location- 5/10
Best feature- Proximity to walking market

Liberty Guest House- Luang Prabang

We were welcomed to the Liberty guest house by possibly the happiest woman we have ever seen who could not stop smiling. She showed us to our room and left us to get settled. The room was pretty big, and we had a double and a single bed. We had a TV, wifi, air-con, and a fridge. We went back down to reception and the woman sat us down with a map and pointed out all the local points of interest, including recommendations of where to eat.
The location was good, we were a short walk away from the night market and the restaurants.

The hotel was run by a brother and a sister, who were very friendly and helpful, and booked our trip to the waterfalls for us. On our second night we came back to our room to find a cockroach scurrying around. The brother came up to our room and caught it with his bare hands!

Cleanliness- 7/10
Atmosphere- 5/10
Location- 9/10
Best feature- The happy owners

Gloria Angkor- Siem Reap

We were picked up at the airport by a tuk tuk driver from this hotel and driven to the hotel. On arrival we were given a drink, some vegetable crips, and an ice cold towel. We were taken to our room, and it was one of the more luxurious rooms we have stayed in. We were quite amazed to see that along with our free toiletries we got a free toothbrush and paste. There was also a bath! It would be our first bath in over a month! The room was big and we had a TV, wifi, air-con and a fridge with free water. There was also a minibar with drinks and snacks. We also had a free breakfast with this room.

As we settled into the room we had a knock on the door. It was a member of staff with a scroll in his hand. He told us that it was our bedtime story! We were amazed by how cute this was. He also left us some sweets and a list of what films were on the TV that evening.
We got a free tuk tuk into the town every evening, run by the hotel. The location was a bit far out so we couldn’t walk to anything. The only thing we didn’t like was that the staff were a bit pushy trying to make you book trips with them.

When we were leaving we got given a free gift, a scarf each, and also a free ride to the bus station.

Cleanliness- 8/10
Atmosphere- 7/10
Location- 4/10 however free tuk tuks into town were helpful
Best feature- The bedtime stories
