Hostel or Hostile? Nagasaki, Hiroshima, Nara

Nagasaki Akari International Hostel, Nagasaki
This was a small hostel just beside the river in Nagasaki, offering private rooms and mixed dorms. It was absolutely freezing inside and I was glad that we’d booked a private room so that at least we could control the temperature. However, we weren’t expecting our twin room to be bunk beds…that was a bit of a disappointment. One thing I had a problem with, but others probably wouldn’t, is that the duvet and pillows provided were feathers and I’m allergic…but they swapped them over for me with no hassle. Unfortunately, the beds, pillows (existing and replacement) were very uncomfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful but the actual hostel itself was very shabby.

K’s Hostel Backpackers, Hiroshima

This was only a short walk from the JR Hiroshima station and very close to a tram line. The staff were very friendly and the facilities were excellent and very clean. The four bed dorm room was a good size and there were plenty of toilets and showers. The beds were comfortable, though yet again there were feather duvet and pillows…what is it with feathers here? They changed them for me without fuss and I slept well. Given how little we were paying for the rooms, I really wasn’t expecting my feather allergy to be a problem! There was also a nice rooftop garden. We would both stay at this hostel again and recommend it to anyone visiting Hiroshima.

Cleanliness – 10/10

Atmosphere – 8/10

Location – 9/10

Best feature – booze in the vending machine (¥140 ish for an Asahi!) plus it was so close to Hiroshima train station.

Yuzan Guesthouse, Nara

When we first arrived, just before check in, we were a bit annoyed to find that the door was locked with a note saying that they were cleaning…we rang the bell and waited for ages before someone answered, which meant that we didn’t have a great first impression…but when we got back later on, inside was a pleasant surprise. The 8 bed mixed dorm was quite nice inside, with curtains giving each bed privacy. The toilet area was freezing but the beds were comfy, so comfy that one of our dorm mates fell asleep promptly and snored the entire night. There was a nice lounge area with free tea and coffee and the staff (once they let us in!) were very friendly.
