Always the opportunist, a while back when I had to wait for my beloved campervan to be serviced, I thought I’d pop into a coffee shop and wait. I randomly found a gorgeous place called Blind Basket on Barry’s Point Road and I’m so pleased that I did!
Inside it’s really clean, minimalist but still feels approachable. Not just because there’s a friendly neon light welcoming you in…
The menu is a delicious combination of Japanese, Korean and Western dishes, including Eggs Benedict (though you’d be hard-pressed to find any coffee shops in NZ that don’t offer this! It’s a staple!), Sashimi Bibimbap, Soft Shell Crab burgers, Okinomiyaki omelette etc. As a huge fan of all things Japan since my trip last November, this cafe was right up my street. There are loads of options for vegetarians, gluten- and dairy-free people too, plus milkshakes, smoothies, juice, coffee, macarons, beautiful-looking tarts, muffins, scones, sushi, pies…the list is endless.
As I’d done an exercise class in the morning, I fancied being a bit virtuous at lunch so opted for the Fitness Bowl (poached eggs, grilled halloumi, avocado, crunched sprouts, greens, beetroot, carrot, crunched nuts, pomegranate and tahini dressing with house tea-smoked salmon), which was absolutely delicious – not to mention beautiful!
When you’re inside, it’s easy to forget that you’re next to a busy, industrial road. They don’t have a website that I could find but their instagram is worth a look. I’m pretty sure I’ll be back, definitely recommend – not just if you’re stuck on Barry’s Point Road waiting for your car to be serviced…I’d make the trip here!
